The 2012 WTA Tour Family Circle Cup Semifinals were as lopsided as you can get. Aussie (2) Samantha Stosur and Slovenian (14) Polona Hercog were merely crash dummies in the road of American (5) Serena Williams and Czech (9) Lucie Safarova who sped past them if they had a lunch date later in the day.

First up was Williams who downed Stosur 6-1, 6-1. As easy as Serena’s match seemed Safarova had a far easier time if that’s possible routing Hercog 6-0, 6-0.

The American’s quarterfinal match was even easier than her first-round match with Samantha winning 4-1 when German (6) Sabine Lisicki retired due to an injury during the quarterfinals. Williams also won 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2 this week in Charleston.

Lucie’s path to the championship in South Carolina didn’t have many speed bumps either as she crushed Croat Mirjana Lucic 6-2, 6-0 and tripped up Russian (4) Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3 during the quarters. Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak was taken out 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-1 in the Czech’s Round of 16 match.

Safarova however is 0-5 all-time against Williams in singles competition. Serena has won all of their five matches on hard court with one coming indoor 6-0, 2-6, 7-5. Lucie also fell in three sets during their first and last matchup. The American roughed up the Czech in Toronto during their last two clashes. On clay Safarova, a left-hander, could steal a set, but more than that might be pushing it. I didn’t think Americans would blossom in Charleston and they largely haven’t. Williams however is not the typical female tennis player of the United States or the world and when she has desire is nearly impossible to deny. Go with Serena big
